i agree with Mantra, one way that you can create traffic is by writing articles and submit them to article directory sites. Make sure that you do have a link to your site in those articles.
another way is to join social media sites such as Facebook, Multiply and MySpace which are the most popular and invite people to visit your site. of course you need to do some convincing strategies to let them visit your page.
you may also submit your site do search engine directories, though this is much less effective compared to the previous techniques still it may help a lot to gain visibility with search engines.

There are several effective ways to generate “FREE” Traffic. Some were already mentioned.
They include:
Article writing and posting articles in PR4-PR6 Article directories. Articles should be at least 400 words in length. The better article directories will not let you simply advertise your product or service. The article should be relevant to a particular topic and should provide valuable information. You can place your URL in the “authors’ box at the end of the article.
Another effective method is Web2.0. This includes blogs, social bookmarking sites, YouTube, Google Videos, etc. You can set up a Blog on Blogger or WordPress (more Google friendly). Your blog name should contain your main keyword if it’s not an awkward fit. Make sure your Blog title and the content contain your main keywords. Post the blog in blog directories.
Use social bookmarking sites (MySpace, Facebook, Technorati, Digg, Propeller, etc. to create interest in your product by talking about the features and benefits. What you want to do is to leverage “Viral Marketing” techniques.
Use forums. You’ll have to join first. Once you become a member make your presence known by making relevant comments in the various forums to topics where people ask questions and you can provide relevant solutions. DO NOT SPAM in a forum. It’s the KISS of DEATH!
Join a traffic exchange or safelists and learn how to write copy. There you can market directly to people who are looking to create or expand their online businesses.
There are lots of other ways to create traffic, it just takes creativity, time and effort.

Ohh the spider web system seems to be going pretty heavy right now . But since you asked here is your answer .
I **** this as everyone always suggests it but it apears no one does it . Artciles . Writes articles that pertain to your site. Submit them to article directories .
Another thing submit to directories . From the directories you may not get too much traffic but believe it or not some Search engines actually use directories as a filler . So it will help to give you quality backlinks.
Another free way is social bookmarking .Get roboform and fill in a profile and start making accounts with social bookmarking pages .Bookmark your website .
Web 2.0 create squidoo hubpages wordpress and bloggers pages about your website .
